Getting a driver's license in Utah can be a daunting task, but it doesn't have to be. To make sure the process is as smooth as possible, it's important to bring all the necessary documents. Faxed or photocopied documents will not be accepted, and all documents provided to the Driver's License Division will be securely stored in a database. In some cases, document approval may take more than one visit. Before you visit a Utah Driver's License Division office, you'll need to make sure you have the following documents: proof of identification, proof of residency, two forms of proof of Utah residency, and proof of your Social Security number and legal status.
All documents must be original or certified copies. To get a Utah driver's license learner's permit, fill out the Utah driver's license application online. If you are 18 years of age or younger, you must complete a driver's education course before obtaining a Utah driver's license. If you are 16 or 17 years old, you must hold your learners permit for at least six months before you can get your Utah driver's license. Anyone under the age of 19 must complete an approved driver's education program before obtaining a driver's license in the state of Utah. If your out-of-state driver's license has expired, you may also be asked to pass the driving skills test.
Keep in mind that you'll need the same documents whether you're transferring a license to Utah or getting your first driver's license. Unless you are going to or from work or school, you must have a licensed driver 21 or older in the front seat or in case of an emergency. Upon completion of the course, the student will receive a certificate and is eligible to take the final practical test in a Driver's License Division office or with an external evaluator. Regardless of where you choose to take your driving test, you'll still need to go to the DMV to get your Utah driver's license. People over the age of 19 may also want to complete driving education as preparation for the road or to avoid the need to wait 90 days after their permit has been issued to obtain a driver's license.
